OVERVIEW
Who Brazil suits
Brazil offers a wide choice of climates, cities and coastal settings; it is too large for a single picture of expat life to be useful. Florianópolis, São Paulo and João Pessoa are starting points for different household plans. Choose the work, school or care requirements first, then investigate a neighbourhood. The beach can remain on the list without being allowed to choose the entire move.
Security, bureaucracy and distance need a place in the budget and calendar. Ask how a particular building handles access and maintenance, and establish the routes you would use after dark or with children. Keep the residence application, health arrangements and emergency funds separate from the attractive rental price. A plan built around one address is easier to test than a promise about Brazil as a whole.
FIVE GOOD REASONS
Five reasons to consider the move
- Florianópolis between work and coast. Florianópolis lets you combine an urban working week with beaches and trails, though peak-season traffic is real.
- São Paulo’s professional life. São Paulo offers a huge professional and cultural market rather than a beach-retirement version of Brazil.
- A João Pessoa routine. João Pessoa appeals to people who want a slower coastal rhythm and time outdoors.
- Climates across a large country. The country has different climates and cultures, so it is possible to keep comparing until a place fits your priorities.
- Everyday sociability. For many newcomers, the sociability of everyday life is the strongest reason to stay.
Compare the attraction of coastal life in Florianópolis with the journeys your household would actually make there. Then put São Paulo through the same test rather than assuming that a large city is automatically unsuitable. The useful question is how much time remains after work, school and essential appointments. Include security arrangements and the cost of getting home in the evening before choosing between the two.
VISAS BY PASSPORT
Entry rules for UK, US, Canadian, EU and Australian citizens
British citizens can normally visit visa-free for up to 90 days. US citizens require the current Brazilian electronic visitor visa before travel. Neither visitor route authorises local work; residence options include work, family, retirement, investment and digital-nomad status.
Check the rule for your passport
British, US, Canadian, Australian and EU travellers should each check the destination’s current passport-specific entry and residence rules. Visitor permission, work rights and residence are separate questions; use the official authority links below for your circumstances.
Canadian passport holders
Canadian passport holders require the Brazilian visitor eVisa under the rules effective 10 April 2025. This is separate from a residence or work authorisation; use Brazil’s official consular portal for the current application.
Australian passport holders
Australian passport holders likewise require Brazil’s visitor eVisa for a short trip under the rules effective 10 April 2025. For employment or a longer stay, confirm the appropriate residence category with the Brazilian consulate.
LONGER STAYS
Long-stay visas and residence permits
Brazil offers residence routes for employment, family, study, investment and other qualifying circumstances. Its digital-nomad rules concern work for an overseas employer rather than local employment. Article 2 of the official nomad resolution also permits its defined activities while visiting, subject to nationality-specific entry and stay rules. For residence, check the application and Federal Police registration sequence with the relevant authority. Brazil Government: Long-stay visas and residence permits.
If the plan involves a Brazilian employer or client, obtain advice on the appropriate work, residence and business arrangements. Do not assume the category for an overseas remote employer covers locally paid activity. Brazil Government: Long-stay visas and residence permits.
COST OF LIVING
What a month might actually cost
Modest one-bedroom home outside the most expensive district, local shopping and controlled travel.
Good rental, private insurance allowance, eating out, local leisure and a working contingency.
Prime location or larger home, imported choices, frequent travel and a wider safety margin.
These are rounded single-person planning estimates, not live quotations. Couples can share housing but should not simply double or halve a solo budget. Families need separate school, childcare and larger-housing calculations. Pound figures use a planning conversion of US$1 ≈ £0.75 as an editable planning assumption, not a verified historical rate; exchange rates move.
Build separate budgets for the Brazilian city and neighbourhood you are considering. A São Paulo work commute and a coastal Florianópolis plan need different transport assumptions. Add appropriate healthcare and security-related property costs to the rent, then include intercity and overseas journeys separately.
In São Paulo, compare the school journey from homes within your budget; in Florianópolis or João Pessoa, check the relevant teaching and care options locally. The solo figures exclude schooling and childcare. Ask for tuition, transport, meals, uniforms and learning support, then add family housing, insurance and the intercity journeys your care or family arrangements would require.
LOCATION SHORTLIST
Places to investigate
Choose a São Paulo district around the work and care you need, or investigate whether Florianópolis or João Pessoa can meet those needs on a different scale. These are separate household plans, not interchangeable coastal and city prices.
ACCOMMODATION
What renting really looks like
São Paulo and Rio have deep but expensive markets; Florianópolis and smaller cities can offer better value. Use a written contrato de locação, check condominium fees and understand guarantor or deposit requirements.
Do not transfer a deposit on the strength of photographs alone. In Florianópolis, ask for a viewing by someone you trust, the landlord's identity, an inventory and the exact written terms for renewal, utilities and early departure. In the smaller or more seasonal locations, find out what happens when the tourist season ends or the weather changes.
HEALTHCARE
How public healthcare actually works
Brazil’s Ministry of Health says SUS is available to everyone in the country, including migrants regardless of immigration status. A local UBS can help with primary care, vaccination and registration; urgent or specialist needs may use other parts of the network. Identify the facilities near the intended home. If buying private cover, compare its actual network, waiting periods and exclusions instead of assuming it replaces every public route. Brazil Ministry of Health: SUS access for migrants.
A UBS is useful for vaccinations and ongoing primary care, an UPA for urgent problems and a hospital for specialist or emergency treatment. A private plano de saúde may have waiting periods or a network limited to a city; inspect its exclusions.
BANKING & INTERNET
Providers, payments and a connection that works
Vivo, Claro and TIM are the national mobile leaders; Claro, Vivo and regional fibre firms provide broadband. Major banks include Itaú, Bradesco, Banco do Brasil, Caixa and Santander.
WORK & NOMAD LIFE
The labour market for expats and remote workers
São Paulo has the deepest market for corporate, technology and professional roles; other regions lean more on tourism, local services or specialist employers. Portuguese makes a material difference to employability, and a foreign remote role still needs the correct immigration and tax treatment.
Working for overseas clients does not settle the Brazilian residence and tax questions. Confirm the permitted activity and registration requirements for your own circumstances, and keep contracts and payment records. Portuguese can make dealings with banks, landlords and service providers more independent. For a home office in Florianópolis, test the connection and noise during working hours before committing to the view from the balcony.
TAX & LEGAL POSITION
Tax, social insurance and legal duties
Receita Federal distinguishes CPF registration from tax residence. Its guidance includes residence from arrival for some immigration or employment circumstances and, for certain temporary arrivals, completion of 184 days within up to 12 months. The applicable start date matters for income and reporting obligations. Ask an adviser to apply current rules to the specific status, work and assets. Brazil Government: Tax, social insurance and legal duties.
RETIRING HERE
Could retirement work in practice?
A coastal retirement can look inexpensive until you add private medical cover, building charges, a car and trips to specialist care. Spend time in the rainy or hottest season before choosing a permanent home.
FAMILIES & SCHOOLS
Schools, language and private-school costs
Ask schools for a grade-specific fee quote rather than using a national range. As one example, Graded in São Paulo lists 2026–27 tuition of R$12,818 per month for PK3–grade 5 and R$15,906 for grades 6–12, paid over 12 months, with additional charges. Compare the full annual bill, curriculum and commute before choosing housing. Graded School: Schools, language and private-school costs.
In São Paulo, the school that suits a child may be across heavy traffic from an otherwise attractive neighbourhood. Compare its real school bus cost with a home nearby. Local Portuguese-medium private education and an IB programme can carry very different fees.
EVERYDAY LIFE
Language, transport, safety and belonging
Portuguese is essential for daily independence. That matters for a lease, a medical conversation or a school decision. Arrange suitable help for those commitments and give local learning time in the week. In a city as large as São Paulo, choose activities close enough to attend regularly.
Brazilian cities ask you to learn street-by-street habits for transport and personal security. Listen to people who live in the particular neighbourhood rather than relying on a national label.
Choose a neighbourhood, not just a city name. In São Paulo the time and comfort of a commute can decide whether a lower rent was worthwhile. In Florianópolis, compare normal traffic with the peak season. In João Pessoa, ask where you would go for a specialist appointment.
Use your first month to practise Portuguese in shops and appointments, learn the payment methods people use and establish a local security routine. Advice from a person who lives on your street is more helpful than a generic claim about Brazil.
A trial in São Paulo should include the commute at the time you will actually make it. Try the grocery trip, locate the relevant clinic and ask about the building’s maintenance arrangements. Compare the energy the city gives you with the time and money those routines consume. Keep the option to change neighbourhood before a longer lease; a large city can feel very different a few streets or transport connections away.
Rio has its own mix of coastal beauty, hills and neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood variation. Brasília is more planned and car-oriented; a town in the south can feel like a different climate. Treat those as additional locations to investigate, not as extensions of a São Paulo housing budget.
