HOW THE GUIDES WORK

Useful information should show its working.

Our guides bring together practical research for people considering a move abroad. Here is how to interpret the figures, sources and recommendations.

What the budget figures mean

One dated model across the site

Model version: 28 October 2026. Household: one adult renting long-term in an urban residential area. Comfortable references are inherited planning inputs, not newly surveyed costs. Different neighbourhoods, lease terms and healthcare needs can change them substantially.

Included: rent, utilities, food, local transport, connectivity, ordinary leisure and an illustrative healthcare/insurance allowance. Excluded: tax, debt, children’s education and childcare, flights, setup, specialist care and emergency reserves. Build those separately. GBP equivalents use US$1 = £0.75 as an editable assumption.

The country guides, comparison and retirement tools use this same source. The careful and spacious scenarios apply 0.84 and 1.24 to the comfortable reference, rounded to US$50. The monthly cost estimator starts with your own inputs and can load a country reference explicitly; it does not claim that the reference is your personal budget.

The country lifestyle figures are illustrative planning scenarios, not surveyed household spending or a promise about what you can live on. Where we show a market statistic or individual rental listing, we identify the source, date, location and limits. Asking prices are not completed rental agreements.

Use the monthly estimator to replace assumptions with your own rent, utilities, food, transport, insurance, schools and reserve. Compare local-currency quotes first. GBP/USD conversions use an editable planning rate; they are not live exchange-rate quotations.

The model contains 29 country references alongside 30 destination guides. Cyprus has no comparable monthly reference and is excluded from country-budget selectors and retirement recommendations; its guide provides separately identified cost components. No national monthly total has been invented to fill that gap.

Named school examples are separate components for a specified child, entry date and academic year. They are not added to the one-adult model as though they formed a researched family budget. Entry fees and tuition-credit deposits have different treatment; a quoted USD amount plus a local-currency amount means both are payable. Housing and healthcare still need household-specific quotes.

Sources and changing rules

The earlier archive recorded a source review on 27 October 2026. That historical record does not certify that every current claim or link was rechecked. A later editorial change is not a fresh verification of every rule or price; source-specific periods remain beside the relevant evidence.

Government and operator sources are the starting point for immigration, public services and transport. Named commercial listings illustrate what was advertised at the time checked. They do not establish availability or endorse a provider. A checked date applies to the information identified, not to every rule or price in a country.

Experience and authorship

Francis Pena writes the Life Without Borders series. The website distinguishes researched guidance from first-hand accounts. It does not claim that every country has been lived in or that a named provider has been personally tested.

Professional questions

A guide cannot establish an individual’s immigration eligibility, tax residence, pension treatment or medical cover. Use the exact official category and, where needed, a suitably qualified adviser. An editorial link is not a guarantee of suitability.

Corrections

If a figure, link or rule needs attention, email Francis with the page address, the issue and a current source. We check the evidence before changing the guide.

Books and commercial links

The companion books are written by Francis Pena. Retailer buttons take you to the named retailer; editions, prices and availability are controlled there. Any future paid referral arrangement should be disclosed alongside the relevant recommendation.
