OVERVIEW
Who Georgia suits
Batumi’s seafront can look persuasive during a short visit. A longer Georgian move also involves ventilation, heating and building management; Tbilisi and Kutaisi provide different comparisons for work, services and the cost of an ordinary week.
In Batumi, inspect ventilation, heating and building management as carefully as the sea view. Tbilisi offers another balance of services and housing costs, while Kutaisi may require travel for some appointments. Compare a property through the season you would live there and ask which services are nearby throughout the year.
FIVE GOOD REASONS
Five reasons to consider the move
- Creative life in Tbilisi. Tbilisi has creative energy, cafés and a growing mix of local and international businesses.
- Batumi between seasons. Batumi offers the Black Sea but changes character sharply with the tourist season.
- Kutaisi at a calmer pace. Kutaisi is a smaller and often calmer base for people who do not need a capital city.
- Mountain weekends. The mountains give weekend travel a very different scale from the city.
- A modest local routine. The cost of a modest routine can be appealing if you avoid assuming every foreigner pays the same rent.
If Batumi’s coast is the draw, consider a winter stay before agreeing to a long lease. Tbilisi’s professional network may answer a different need, and Kutaisi offers a smaller-city comparison. Use specific appointments, work arrangements and transport routes to distinguish them; the easiest place to visit is not automatically the best place to handle regular responsibilities.
VISAS BY PASSPORT
Entry rules for UK, US, Canadian, EU and Australian citizens
British nationals can normally stay visa-free for up to 365 days; other nationalities should check the current official list. Visitor permission does not by itself settle work or tax status. From 1 January 2026, tourists covered by the entry rules must hold health-and-accident insurance for the whole stay, with coverage of at least GEL30,000 and the required policy details in Georgian or English. Check the rules for your exact status before departure. UK Government: Entry rules for UK, US, Canadian, EU and Australian citizens · Georgian Consular Services: Entry rules for UK, US, Canadian, EU and Australian citizens.
Check the rule for your passport
British, US, Canadian, Australian and EU travellers should each check the destination’s current passport-specific entry and residence rules. Visitor permission, work rights and residence are separate questions; use the official authority links below for your circumstances.
LONGER STAYS
Long-stay visas and residence permits
A visa-free visit is not permanent residence or general permission to work. Georgia’s Labour Migration Law now provides a right-to-work process for labour immigrants and self-employed foreign nationals, alongside relevant immigration status; applicable provisions took effect in 2026 and have exemptions and transitional detail. Before taking local employment, clients or entrepreneurial activity, obtain advice on your exact arrangement and current procedure. Property or investment residence has separate criteria. Legislative Herald of Georgia: Long-stay visas and residence permits.
Check work authorisation, residence and tax registration as separate questions before earning from Georgia. A long visa-free allowance is not a reason to postpone these checks, and a property purchase is not blanket permission to work. Ask the competent authority to confirm any claimed exemption in writing. Legislative Herald of Georgia: Long-stay visas and residence permits.
COST OF LIVING
What a month might actually cost
Modest one-bedroom home outside the most expensive district, local shopping and controlled travel.
Good rental, private insurance allowance, eating out, local leisure and a working contingency.
Prime location or larger home, imported choices, frequent travel and a wider safety margin.
These are rounded single-person planning estimates, not live quotations. Couples can share housing but should not simply double or halve a solo budget. Families need separate school, childcare and larger-housing calculations. Pound figures use a planning conversion of US$1 ≈ £0.75 as an editable planning assumption, not a verified historical rate; exchange rates move.
In Tbilisi, compare the proposed rent with bills and transport from that district. For Batumi, ask how costs and availability change outside the tourist season, and inspect heating and ventilation. Kutaisi needs its own service budget rather than an automatic discount from the capital.
In Tbilisi, locate the intended school and care provider before drawing a housing radius. Batumi and Kutaisi need their own checks for year-round places and services. Obtain tuition, transport, meals, uniform and support charges, as education and childcare are excluded from the solo model. Add family medical costs and winter home comfort rather than letting the rent stand for the entire budget.
LOCATION SHORTLIST
Places to investigate
Try Tbilisi for its working-city routine, Batumi with its seasonal differences in mind, and Kutaisi if a smaller base is the attraction. In Batumi especially, inspect the building’s ventilation and heating alongside the sea view and advertised rental price.
ACCOMMODATION
What renting really looks like
Tbilisi has the widest choice, while Batumi rents can surge in summer. Use a bilingual lease, record meter readings and confirm address-registration and early-termination terms.
Do not transfer a deposit on the strength of photographs alone. In Tbilisi, ask for a viewing by someone you trust, the landlord's identity, an inventory and the exact written terms for renewal, utilities and early departure. In the smaller or more seasonal locations, find out what happens when the tourist season ends or the weather changes.
HEALTHCARE
How public healthcare actually works
Before relying on state-funded healthcare, ask the responsible health authority whether your exact status is eligible and which providers it covers. Obtain a personal quotation for private insurance and identify a clinic, hospital and referral or transfer plan for the treatment you need. Do not assume a foreign-resident document guarantees public funding.
Ask providers in your intended city about specialist care actually available, what your policy pays and where you would be referred if treatment is unavailable locally. Compare the journey and cost before choosing Tbilisi, Batumi or a smaller base.
BANKING & INTERNET
Providers, payments and a connection that works
Magticom, Silknet and Cellfie are the main mobile operators; Magticom and Silknet also provide fixed internet. TBC Bank and Bank of Georgia dominate retail banking.
WORK & NOMAD LIFE
The labour market for expats and remote workers
Tbilisi has the best chance of local professional work, particularly in technology, services and education. Georgia’s business and tax arrangements attract remote earners, but eligibility and substance matter; get advice before registering a company for a headline rate.
For remote work, establish both the employer’s location policy and your own residence and tax position before extending the stay. A Tbilisi office role needs a separate assessment of pay and terms. In either setting, test the fixed connection at the home, and keep a record of time spent in the country from the beginning.
TAX & LEGAL POSITION
Tax, social insurance and legal duties
The Revenue Service handles personal income tax and small-business registration. A 183-day residence threshold matters, but the well-known small-business status requires qualifying activity, registration and compliance; it does not simply attach to any foreign freelancer. Georgian-source income, payroll and foreign contracts need to be separated. A low headline rate is a poor basis for a move without checking the home-country position.
Small-business status is not simply a reward for staying 183 days. Registration, the nature of the activity and source of income matter; compare an overseas employer with a Georgian customer before using a promotional low-tax calculation.
RETIRING HERE
Could retirement work in practice?
Think through winter heating, building accessibility and access to specialist care. The cheapest apartment may be expensive in time and effort if stairs or poorly insulated rooms become daily obstacles.
FAMILIES & SCHOOLS
Schools, language and private-school costs
Check the intended school’s teaching language, recognised curriculum and examination pathway. For a private or international option, request a current schedule for the child’s grade, including entry, transport and support charges. The previous US$4,000–18,000 national range is not a verified fee survey. Compare housing with the actual school journey and availability rather than a citywide promise.
Tbilisi's international schools can be distant from cheaper rentals, while Batumi has fewer places. Ask about the final secondary grades and recognition of examinations before choosing a home around a younger child's current class.
EVERYDAY LIFE
Language, transport, safety and belonging
English is growing among younger people; Georgian or Russian can help. In Tbilisi, Batumi or Kutaisi, identify language assistance for leases, repairs and medical discussions before it becomes urgent. A regular class or neighbourhood activity is a better test of settling than a busy week of sightseeing, especially when comparing a resort season with quieter months.
A Tbilisi apartment should be tested for heating, ventilation, water pressure and street noise. The beautiful old building and the easy-to-manage one are not always the same. Batumi should be seen outside the busy summer season.
Ask a local professional to explain the tax and registration consequences before starting a business. The first month is a good time to learn processes; it is too early to assume a promotional tax rate fits your activity.
Practise the conversations that a hotel normally handles: a repair, an appointment and a question about a bill. English may work in international settings while another errand needs language assistance. Identify dependable help near your proposed home and confirm the health cover available to your status before deciding that a flexible stay can become a long one.
Tbilisi combines the widest professional network, private hospitals and international schools with rising rents in some popular districts. Batumi's coastal towers and tourist seasons make a very different housing market; inspect ventilation, winter heating and the building's management before accepting an attractive sea view. Kutaisi is smaller still and may suit a person who can work independently but needs to plan visits to Tbilisi for certain services. The long visa-free allowance makes it easy to postpone a decision about residence and tax, yet a long stay should be recorded and planned from the outset. English helps in international businesses, while Georgian or Russian may be needed in routine appointments. A public health programme should never be assumed to cover a foreign resident without checking status. Make the trial stay about the home and neighbourhood you can afford, not the hotel district where a first visit felt effortless.
