OVERVIEW
Who Mauritius suits
A holiday week on one Mauritian coast is a narrow test for a long-term home. Grand Baie, Tamarin and Moka connect differently to work and services; car use, imports and access to specialist care belong in the comparison from the start.
Compare the north, west and central districts using the journeys your household would make. A Port Louis or central-area base may meet service needs differently from a coastal home. Ask what happens in less comfortable weather, and visit more than one setting before deciding that a single holiday week represents the whole year.
FIVE GOOD REASONS
Five reasons to consider the move
- Grand Baie’s international community. Grand Baie has a busy international community and a wide range of services.
- Tamarin on the west coast. Tamarin offers a west-coast routine with outdoor life close by.
- Moka near schools and offices. Moka can suit people who prefer a more central address near schools and offices.
- A multilingual start. English and French help in many settings, though learning local customs matters more than language alone.
- Comparing coast and inland. The island is small enough to compare different coasts, yet weather and commuting still vary substantially.
The beach can be an everyday pleasure if the address leaves time to use it. Price school transport, commuting and appointments before choosing that address, then inspect ventilation and water arrangements. A practical inland base and regular coastal visits may be a useful comparison while you learn how the island’s travel times shape the week.
VISAS BY PASSPORT
Entry rules for UK, US, Canadian, EU and Australian citizens
British and US visitors generally do not need a visa in advance; the immigration officer grants the period of stay. Longer routes include occupation, premium, retired non-citizen and investor permits with income or investment conditions.
Check the rule for your passport
British, US, Canadian, Australian and EU travellers should each check the destination’s current passport-specific entry and residence rules. Visitor permission, work rights and residence are separate questions; use the official authority links below for your circumstances.
LONGER STAYS
Long-stay visas and residence permits
Long-stay routes include an Occupation Permit for a qualifying professional, investor or self-employed person; a Residence Permit for a retired non-citizen; family dependants; and a Premium Visa for qualifying remote income. Income, age, deposit and investment criteria differ. The Economic Development Board and Passport and Immigration Office should be used for current requirements. The Premium Visa is not a local employment permit.
An Occupation Permit for employment or business and a retired non-citizen Residence Permit have different income and work rights. A Premium Visa is designed for qualifying foreign income; it should not be used as a shortcut into local employment.
COST OF LIVING
What a month might actually cost
Modest one-bedroom home outside the most expensive district, local shopping and controlled travel.
Good rental, private insurance allowance, eating out, local leisure and a working contingency.
Prime location or larger home, imported choices, frequent travel and a wider safety margin.
These are rounded single-person planning estimates, not live quotations. Couples can share housing but should not simply double or halve a solo budget. Families need separate school, childcare and larger-housing calculations. Pound figures use a planning conversion of US$1 ≈ £0.75 as an editable planning assumption, not a verified historical rate; exchange rates move.
In Mauritius, compare a coastal rental with the car journeys it creates to school, work or care. Grand Baie, Tamarin and Moka need their own utility and housing quotes. Imported purchases and specialist travel should remain visible rather than being absorbed into a reassuring island-wide total.
A school in or near Moka creates a different housing search from a coastal family plan in Grand Baie or Tamarin. Obtain the place, teaching-language information and full tuition, meals, transport and support charges first. School and childcare are outside the solo figures. Add family housing, car costs and healthcare, including any travel needed for a specialist unavailable near home.
LOCATION SHORTLIST
Places to investigate
Grand Baie and Tamarin put different coastal routines on the shortlist; Moka offers a more central comparison near schools and offices. Follow the weekday journeys from actual homes before deciding how much time the household would have to enjoy its chosen setting.
ACCOMMODATION
What renting really looks like
Grand Baie, Tamarin and the west/north coasts carry foreign-resident premiums. Check cyclone resilience, water storage, generator provision, humidity and whether the lease supports permit applications.
Do not transfer a deposit on the strength of photographs alone. In Grand Baie, ask for a viewing by someone you trust, the landlord's identity, an inventory and the exact written terms for renewal, utilities and early departure. In the smaller or more seasonal locations, find out what happens when the tourist season ends or the weather changes.
HEALTHCARE
How public healthcare actually works
The Ministry of Health and Wellness runs area health centres, district and regional hospitals, including Dr A. G. Jeetoo in Port Louis and Victoria Hospital at Candos. Public services are extensive for citizens, but a foreign permit holder should establish whether care is free or chargeable in their circumstances. Private hospitals and clinics offer quicker access in central districts. For complex specialties, some residents arrange treatment abroad; an evacuation benefit is worth pricing.
Regional hospitals and area health centres provide a public route, but the terms for a foreign permit holder need confirmation. A resident on the west coast should know which private or public hospital can handle an urgent case and whether overseas treatment is insured.
BANKING & INTERNET
Providers, payments and a connection that works
my.t, Emtel and Chili are the main telecom brands. MCB, SBM, Absa Mauritius and AfrAsia are prominent banks.
WORK & NOMAD LIFE
The labour market for expats and remote workers
Financial services, tourism and technology provide some specialist opportunities, mostly around the main business centres. A residence permit, occupation permit or overseas remote arrangement has different rules; check which actually describes the work you will do.
For work, confirm the activity and family arrangements supported by the applicable permission before building a plan around overseas income. Ask about the home’s fixed connection and test calls during normal hours. A local offer also needs a transport calculation: the salary cannot tell you how much of the day or budget will be spent travelling.
TAX & LEGAL POSITION
Tax, social insurance and legal duties
Mauritius tax residence can arise through domicile, 183 or more days in an income year, or 270 or more days across that year and the preceding two years. Resident individuals must review Mauritius-source income and foreign income remitted to Mauritius; a permit or offshore account is not a tax ruling. Obtain advice on the actual income and tax year. Mauritius Revenue Authority: Tax, social insurance and legal duties · Mauritius Revenue Authority: Tax, social insurance and legal duties.
A Premium Visa or an offshore bank account is not itself a tax ruling. The Mauritius Revenue Authority needs the real day count, work source and remittances to determine filing and liability.
RETIRING HERE
Could retirement work in practice?
An attractive coastal rental is only part of the budget. Factor in imported goods, cyclone-season preparation, medical insurance and the trip to a specialist clinic.
FAMILIES & SCHOOLS
Schools, language and private-school costs
Compare the actual school's language, curriculum, examination route and learning support before choosing between the north, central plateau or west coast. Obtain its full current fee offer with admission, transport and other charges. Test the school journey from the proposed home rather than using an island-wide dollar allowance.
A child using a French-medium route may adapt differently from one seeking a British or IB programme. Compare the actual campus with the proposed coastal home; island distances are modest on a map but school traffic matters.
EVERYDAY LIFE
Language, transport, safety and belonging
English and French are widely used alongside Mauritian Creole. In Mauritius, establish the language support needed for each important appointment rather than assuming one language works everywhere. Regular local activities can help a coastal home become more than a long holiday. Choose them around the journeys to work, school or services you will already make.
Compare coasts in the season you will live there. The wind, rain and commute can change your view of an otherwise lovely rental. Moka may serve a family with school and work needs better than a more distant beach address.
Ask about cyclone preparation, drainage and the insurer’s terms before signing. Imported goods and specialist medical care deserve their own budget lines, even when local daily costs look manageable.
During a trial, ask about routine care from the proposed address and cover relevant to your status. Keep possible travel for treatment visible where needed. French, English and some Creole can support different everyday exchanges; notice which tasks you can handle independently and where you would need regular assistance.
The north, the central plateau and the west coast can feel like different islands in climate and travel time. Port Louis and the central districts place many services and schools nearer, while a beachfront home may require longer drives for regular appointments. Public area health centres and regional hospitals should be mapped from the actual address, especially if your permit does not guarantee the same funding position as a citizen's. Private care and potential treatment abroad can be meaningful parts of a retiree's insurance plan. English and French are widely useful, and understanding some Creole can enrich everyday encounters. A home that seems inexpensive should be inspected for ventilation, cyclone preparedness, water and internet. School transport or commuting by car may erase part of a housing saving. Visit outside a single ideal-weather week before deciding which part of Mauritius works through a whole year.
