OVERVIEW
Who Mexico suits
Mérida’s heat and a Mexico City commute test different preferences. Puerto Vallarta adds a coastal option, but a household still needs local security information, a usable healthcare route and a housing budget that reflects the particular neighbourhood.
Compare Mexico City, Guadalajara or a smaller candidate base using the services you need. A clinic appointment may be local in one place and a substantial journey in another. Price ordinary transport and inspect water supply, heat and drainage at the home before deciding how much a lower rent saves over the year.
FIVE GOOD REASONS
Five reasons to consider the move
- Mexico City’s neighbourhoods. Mexico City offers museums, food and a vast neighbourhood choice.
- Mérida at a slower pace. Mérida draws people looking for a slower rhythm, though the heat deserves an honest trial.
- Puerto Vallarta by the coast. Puerto Vallarta brings a coastal community and easier access to some international services.
- Highlands and coast to compare. Domestic travel lets you compare highlands and coast before deciding which climate is livable.
- Keeping family visits feasible. For North American families, flight connections can make visiting relatives more realistic than from farther away.
A coastal setting or inland centre may offer the pace you want, while a large city provides services that would otherwise require travel. Keep both sides visible. A trial should include neighbourhood errands and the journey for continuing care, with Spanish support if needed, rather than only the attractions that first put Mexico on the list.
VISAS BY PASSPORT
Entry rules for UK, US, Canadian, EU and Australian citizens
British and US citizens can normally visit without a visa; immigration decides the authorised stay, up to 180 days, at entry. Temporary residence generally relies on financial solvency, family or Mexican work permission; permanent residence has higher or family-based tests.
Check the rule for your passport
British, US, Canadian, Australian and EU travellers should each check the destination’s current passport-specific entry and residence rules. Visitor permission, work rights and residence are separate questions; use the official authority links below for your circumstances.
LONGER STAYS
Long-stay visas and residence permits
Temporary residence can rest on financial solvency, a family link or authorised employment; permanent residence has separate family, retirement/financial and time-based routes. Applications often begin at a Mexican consulate, followed by a residence-card step at the Instituto Nacional de Migración. Visitor permission can be shorter than the maximum and does not authorise Mexican employment. The solvency amounts differ by consulate and date.
The Instituto Nacional de Migración issues residence cards after the appropriate consular or domestic step. A temporary resident using financial solvency and an employee with work permission bring different documents; an initial tourist stay is a separate status.
COST OF LIVING
What a month might actually cost
Modest one-bedroom home outside the most expensive district, local shopping and controlled travel.
Good rental, private insurance allowance, eating out, local leisure and a working contingency.
Prime location or larger home, imported choices, frequent travel and a wider safety margin.
These are rounded single-person planning estimates, not live quotations. Couples can share housing but should not simply double or halve a solo budget. Families need separate school, childcare and larger-housing calculations. Pound figures use a planning conversion of US$1 ≈ £0.75 as an editable planning assumption, not a verified historical rate; exchange rates move.
Assemble a budget for the specific Mexican neighbourhood, including transport, utilities and appropriate care. Mérida’s heat and a Mexico City commute create different questions from Puerto Vallarta’s coastal routine. Keep family visits and other long journeys separate from everyday spending.
Compare a Mexico City school with the options in Mérida or Puerto Vallarta before using housing prices to choose the family base. Confirm teaching language, admissions and support, and collect tuition, deposits, transport and meal charges. Education and childcare are excluded from the solo model. Add larger housing, medical provision and family travel, with security and the school journey considered together.
LOCATION SHORTLIST
Places to investigate
Mexico City offers extensive neighbourhood choice, while Mérida needs an honest trial of the heat. Puerto Vallarta supplies a coastal alternative. Use the clinic, school and ordinary transport routes to assess the home, with current security information for the particular area.
ACCOMMODATION
What renting really looks like
Mexico City, coastal resorts and expat centres have very different markets. Confirm whether utilities and maintenance are included, use a written inventory and avoid large deposits without verified ownership.
Do not transfer a deposit on the strength of photographs alone. In Mexico City, ask for a viewing by someone you trust, the landlord's identity, an inventory and the exact written terms for renewal, utilities and early departure. In the smaller or more seasonal locations, find out what happens when the tourist season ends or the weather changes.
HEALTHCARE
How public healthcare actually works
IMSS covers enrolled formal workers and eligible family members; qualifying independent foreign workers can investigate voluntary IMSS enrolment. ISSSTE serves public-sector employees, while IMSS-Bienestar operates public services for people without social security in participating states. Public network and eligibility vary by state, and private hospitals are a common choice in larger cities. Do not rely on the old INSABI label. Confirm the nearest emergency hospital and whether your chosen insurance pays it directly.
IMSS enrolment may follow a formal job or a qualifying voluntary route for independent workers. IMSS-Bienestar is intended for those without social security in participating states. A private insurer's network should name a hospital close to the proposed address.
BANKING & INTERNET
Providers, payments and a connection that works
Compare coverage and terms from Telcel, AT&T Mexico and Movistar for mobile service, and Telmex/Infinitum or Totalplay for fixed internet at the actual address. For banking, investigate BBVA México, Banorte, Santander and Banamex. Banamex and Citi México have operated separately since 1 December 2024; use the current brand and verified official channels. Banamex: Banamex and Citi separation.
WORK & NOMAD LIFE
The labour market for expats and remote workers
Mexico City has the deepest professional market, while tourism and services shape many coastal jobs. Spanish matters in local work; remote workers need to understand what their visitor or residence permission allows and where their income is taxed.
A local job in a large city needs a realistic commute and net-pay calculation. For overseas work, confirm permission, payments and tax independently of the housing decision. Test the property’s connection and ask about interruptions. A modest home near the right route can leave more time and money than an impressive one far away.
TAX & LEGAL POSITION
Tax, social insurance and legal duties
SAT administers the RFC tax number and returns. Tax residence turns on a home or centre of vital interests rather than automatically after a tourist-day count. Residents commonly report worldwide income; local wages, rental property and foreign freelance invoices have different paperwork. A US citizen also has continuing US filing duties. Get advice about the year of arrival and any overseas business before assuming foreign payment means foreign-source work.
The RFC and tax residence answer different questions. Someone working for an overseas client from Mexico should assess the location of services and their home-country ties, rather than assuming a foreign payment keeps all tax abroad.
RETIRING HERE
Could retirement work in practice?
The monthly budget in a popular foreign-resident district can be far higher than a national average. Get an insurance quotation at your age and compare proximity to hospitals and family flights.
FAMILIES & SCHOOLS
Schools, language and private-school costs
Ask the actual school in Mexico City, Monterrey, Guadalajara or the proposed coastal town about language, qualifications and support. Get a dated full-fee offer including admission, transport and exams for the child's year group. Do not budget from a country-wide private-school range or assume a programme is offered through the final grade.
A coastal family's school options may be narrower than in Mexico City or Guadalajara. Confirm that a child can finish the intended programme and ask about admission, bus and exam charges before comparing houses.
EVERYDAY LIFE
Language, transport, safety and belonging
Spanish is important outside international enclaves. A Mexican move becomes easier to manage when Spanish learning includes the landlord, clinic and day-to-day transport. In Mexico City, Mérida or Puerto Vallarta, try a recurring activity outside the visitor circuit. Arrange suitable assistance for legal or medical conversations where the detail matters.
In Mérida, test the hottest month rather than the nicest one. In Mexico City, the commute and air quality can matter more than a central-sounding district name. In Puerto Vallarta, check how rental terms and prices change with the tourist season.
Find a doctor, understand the water arrangements at the property and compare payment options. A regular neighbourhood routine will tell you more about fit than another week in a hotel.
Use Spanish to arrange something practical during the trial: a viewing, repair or care enquiry. Establish which healthcare route applies to your status and location, then keep provider details with the housing notes. Recording transport, bills and everyday purchases will give you a stronger basis for comparing a second city than another broad cost estimate.
Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey offer large job markets and hospitals, but each contains neighbourhoods with very different transport and air-quality experiences. A colonial inland city or coastal town may suit a retiree, yet a planned specialist visit could involve travel to a major centre. IMSS, IMSS-Bienestar and private hospitals are different routes; learn which one applies to your status and the state in which you will live. Spanish is invaluable for healthcare, leases and local administration even where expat communities function in English. The amount of time lost in a commute can change the value of a cheaper rental. Water supply, heat and rainy-season drainage deserve attention at the exact property. Visit more than one location and price ordinary groceries, private care and a realistic way to get around. The country cannot be reduced to a single cost or safety figure.
