OVERVIEW

Who Spain suits

A home in Valencia, Málaga or Madrid comes with a particular commute, local administration and school system. Those choices deserve more weight than a broad promise about Spanish living costs, especially where popular-area rents put pressure on the budget.

Compare Valencia, Málaga and Madrid using the actual home, commute and care needs of your household. Families should ask about the language of instruction before choosing the rental area. Inspect insulation as well as cooling, and distinguish a seasonal offer from a lease that supports the full year you are planning to live there.

FIVE GOOD REASONS

Five reasons to consider the move

  1. Valencia with the beach nearby. Valencia gives a substantial city, beaches and a different housing calculation from Madrid.
  2. Málaga’s international community. Málaga has a large international community and easy coastal travel, though desirable areas cost more.
  3. Madrid throughout the year. Madrid offers the broadest professional market and year-round urban life.
  4. Rail for a wider search. Rail links make it possible to live beyond the most expensive districts and still travel widely.
  5. EU residence where eligible. For eligible EU citizens, the residence framework may be simpler than in a destination outside the Union.

A city’s social life is easier to enjoy when the home leaves time and money for it. Test the journey to work, language classes or school from each address. Keep Madrid in the comparison as a major city with substantial services, rather than assuming it represents a quiet, lower-service alternative to another urban base.

VISAS BY PASSPORT

Entry rules for UK, US, Canadian, EU and Australian citizens

British and US citizens can visit under Schengen’s 90-days-in-180 rule. Longer routes include non-lucrative, employment, family, study, entrepreneur and digital-nomad residence, normally applied for before or soon after arrival as rules specify.

Check the rule for your passport

British, US, Canadian, Australian and EU travellers should each check the destination’s current passport-specific entry and residence rules. Visitor permission, work rights and residence are separate questions; use the official authority links below for your circumstances.

EU passport holders

An EU citizen normally has EU free-movement rights here, but a stay beyond the initial period may require registration and proof of work, study or sufficient resources and health cover. A non-EU partner may have a different documentary route.

British, American, Canadian and Australian visitors should check the Schengen short-stay calculation and passport conditions. The usual visa-free allowance for these passports is 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across Schengen, not 90 days in each country. A long-stay national route is a separate application.

LONGER STAYS

Long-stay visas and residence permits

Long stays for non-EU nationals include the non-lucrative visa, employment, self-employment, family, study and international teleworking (digital nomad) route. The non-lucrative route is not a remote-work permit. EU citizens register their residence under free movement. Applications and permits involve consulates, immigration offices and police for the TIE card; the exact sequence depends on the route.

A non-lucrative visa is intended for residence without working, unlike an international teleworking permit. An employer or family route has its own documents. EU citizens register rather than seeking either national non-EU visa.

COST OF LIVING

What a month might actually cost

CarefulUS$2,250 / £1,688

Modest one-bedroom home outside the most expensive district, local shopping and controlled travel.

ComfortableUS$2,700 / £2,025

Good rental, private insurance allowance, eating out, local leisure and a working contingency.

Higher comfortUS$3,350 / £2,513

Prime location or larger home, imported choices, frequent travel and a wider safety margin.

These are rounded single-person planning estimates, not live quotations. Couples can share housing but should not simply double or halve a solo budget. Families need separate school, childcare and larger-housing calculations. Pound figures use a planning conversion of US$1 ≈ £0.75 as an editable planning assumption, not a verified historical rate; exchange rates move.

Use a year-round Spanish rental quote and check seasonal heating and cooling. Compare the transport and care arrangements from the proposed home in Valencia, Málaga or Madrid. Education, residence setup and trips home remain additional costs even when a monthly living figure appears comfortable.

Ask about the actual language of instruction and school place in the Spanish region you are considering before choosing a rental area. Request tuition where applicable, transport, meals, uniforms and support costs; schooling and childcare are excluded from the solo figures. Add family healthcare and larger housing, and make sure a seasonal lease does not interrupt the school-year plan.

LOCATION SHORTLIST

Places to investigate

Valencia, Málaga and Madrid provide different housing and work searches. Identify the local school language and care arrangements, then inspect homes within the budget. Confirm that a lease supports the full year before treating a coastal seasonal offer as a settled family base.

ACCOMMODATION

What renting really looks like

Madrid, Barcelona and island/coastal hotspots are expensive. Check seasonal clauses, agency fees, deposit protection, heating/cooling and whether the contract supports padrón registration.

Do not transfer a deposit on the strength of photographs alone. In Valencia, ask for a viewing by someone you trust, the landlord's identity, an inventory and the exact written terms for renewal, utilities and early departure. In the smaller or more seasonal locations, find out what happens when the tourist season ends or the weather changes.

HEALTHCARE

How public healthcare actually works

The Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS) is delivered by regional services, such as SERMAS in Madrid, CatSalut in Catalonia and the Andalusian Health Service. Eligible residents obtain a tarjeta sanitaria for their region and usually enter through a centro de salud, where a GP makes specialist referrals. Access may follow Spanish social-security work, residence entitlement or an S1 arrangement; some permit applicants need comprehensive private insurance first. Regional lists and waits differ, and moving between regions can require new registration.

A regional health card opens the local SNS route once a person qualifies. A Madrid SERMAS referral and a Catalan CatSalut registration are administered regionally; private insurance required for a visa should be checked against that transition.

BANKING & INTERNET

Providers, payments and a connection that works

Movistar, Orange/MásOrange, Vodafone and Digi are major telecom providers. Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank and Sabadell are large banks.

WORK & NOMAD LIFE

The labour market for expats and remote workers

Madrid and Barcelona have the widest corporate and technology markets; Málaga and Valencia have growing specialist sectors but different salary and housing dynamics. Remote workers should match their actual employment or self-employment to the correct residence and tax route.

A local offer and a remote contract need different questions about work permission, social insurance and take-home income. Confirm the arrangement for the actual activity and region before choosing housing on the assumption that paperwork can follow. Include the commute or home-office requirements and leave a reserve for the period while the household gets established.

TAX & LEGAL POSITION

Tax, social insurance and legal duties

The Agencia Tributaria applies the 183-day rule and centre-of-interests tests; residents normally declare worldwide income. Foreign assets, wealth or solidarity taxes, pensions and regional rates can materially change a retiree’s budget. The special inbound worker regime has eligibility and timing rules, and a digital nomad visa does not automatically qualify someone. Check social security and treaty positions before choosing a province.

A regional address may change taxes on income, assets or property, so the place you choose can affect more than rent. A digital nomad should check special tax-regime eligibility separately from the residence authorisation.

RETIRING HERE

Could retirement work in practice?

A good retirement here is about the street, services and people, not just sunshine. Compare public healthcare entitlement with private-cover costs, especially during any gap before registration.

FAMILIES & SCHOOLS

Schools, language and private-school costs

Compare the actual school's language of instruction, curriculum and final qualifications. Regional-language policies and support can affect the choice of campus. Obtain a full current fee schedule for any private or international school, including admission, transport and exams, and ask what charges apply at a publicly subsidised school.

In Catalonia or Valencia, a public-school language plan may be different from Madrid's. Ask the school about instruction, support and exam qualifications. Private fees and transport should be priced for the real campus, not a national average.

EVERYDAY LIFE

Language, transport, safety and belonging

Spanish transforms integration even where English is available. Spanish learning can support the everyday work of settling, alongside any regional language relevant to the household’s school or appointments. In Valencia, Málaga or Madrid, pick an activity close enough to repeat. Arrange suitable help when legal or medical detail exceeds your current fluency.

A sunny Valencia rental may have different summer noise and heating needs from the same-looking flat in Madrid. Málaga’s international appeal can mean stronger competition for a suitable long-term lease. Check the specific district in both quiet and busy months.

Start with the appointment and registration steps that apply to your status, then ask what health cover you need while they are in progress. A family should confirm a school place before committing to a distant suburb.

Use a trial to understand regional health registration and ask a school about the language support your child would need. Test shopping and appointment journeys from the home. Spanish learning remains useful even where another regional language also shapes local life; treat the address as a practical choice rather than only a weather preference.

Madrid and Barcelona have broad work, school and specialist choices with very different neighbourhood costs. Valencia or Málaga can offer another pace, while an island or village may mean travel for certain hospital services or a particular international curriculum. Spain's public health services are regional: a tarjeta sanitaria and GP route in one autonomous community cannot be treated as a generic national appointment card that requires no registration after a move. Ask how eligibility arises under your work or residence category. Summer heat, winter insulation and the mix of seasonal and permanent rentals make an actual property visit essential. Public schools may use Catalan, Valencian, Basque or another regional language as well as Spanish, depending on the area. A family choosing a school should compare the language of instruction and daily journey before renting. Tax rates and some property charges vary by region too, making the address part of the financial decision.
